Balloon Bomb Experiment

⏱ ~15 minutes 💰 Pantry staples 🔨 Skill level: Kid-friendly

The idea

This is less a craft and more a kitchen-science trick, but it's one of the kids' favorites: a classic baking soda and vinegar reaction, sealed up inside a balloon so the gas has nowhere to go but out — and the "explosion" is really just the balloon inflating itself.

Materials

  • Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • White vinegar (acetic acid)
  • A plastic glove or small plastic bag
  • A balloon (12-inch or larger works best)
  • A funnel
  • An elastic band

What we did

We measured 2–3 tablespoons of vinegar into a plastic glove (a small plastic bag works just as well), then tied it off tightly with an elastic band so nothing could leak out early. Separately, we used the funnel to measure 2–3 tablespoons of baking soda into the balloon itself.

Then came the tricky part: stretching the neck of the balloon open just enough to drop the tied-off vinegar packet inside, without letting the two mix yet, and tying off the balloon at the top.

Once everything was sealed and ready, we had the kids stomp on the balloon to burst the vinegar packet inside. The vinegar and baking soda react instantly, and the carbon dioxide gas that's released has nowhere to go but into the balloon, inflating it right in front of them.

Safety note: Do this one outside or over a sink — the reaction happens fast and can fizz out through the neck of the balloon if it isn't tied tightly enough. It's also a good idea for an adult to handle tying off the balloon, since it needs a firm knot right after the packet goes in.

Result

A balloon that inflates itself with a satisfying fizz, with zero matches or heat involved — just a simple acid-base reaction the kids can watch happen. Bigger balloons give a more dramatic inflation, and doubling the vinegar and baking soda amounts makes it even more impressive if you've got a large enough balloon to handle the pressure.
