DIY Industrial Pipe Desk
The idea
An industrial-style desk built from two pine panels and black iron pipe fittings. The tabletop is glued, stained, and sealed, a few 1x4 boards underneath add support, and the pipe legs screw right on.
Materials
- (2) 1″ × 12″ × 4 ft laminated pine boards, glued together for the tabletop
- (4) 3/4″ black iron floor flanges (sold in 2-packs)
- (4) 3/4″ black iron caps
- (4) 3/4″ black iron tees
- (4) 3/4″ × 6″ black steel pipe nipples
- (3) 3/4″ × 48″ black steel pipe nipples, cut into (6) 16″ pieces (the cut ends have to be threaded, so you only get (2) 16″ pieces from each 48″ pipe)
- (1) Minwax oil-based interior wood stain in Espresso
- (1) Varathane Diamond Finish water-based polyurethane (semi-gloss clear, 236 ml), to seal
- (1) LePage Pro Carpenter's glue (150 ml)
- (1) 1×4 board, cut down to (2) 22″ pieces and (1) 30″ piece
- Wood screws (we used #8 × 1¼″)
- Wood clamps and a drill
What we did
Step 1: Glue the planks together
Glue the two planks together to make the tabletop. Use wood clamps to make sure you get a tight fit.
Step 2: Stain and seal
Stain the planks, wipe off the excess, then finish with the sealant.
Step 3: Add the 1×4 supports
Add the 1×4 boards underneath for structural support, and stain them too. We cut the 1×4 into two 22″ pieces and one 30″ piece.
Step 4: Build the leg structure
Build the leg structure out of the pipe, tees, flanges, and caps. Each end gets two legs joined by a crossbar.
Step 5: Flip it and attach the legs
Flip the table upside down and screw the legs onto the table.
Result
A sturdy industrial desk with a dark stained wood top and black iron pipe legs.
